Nagoya 2026: Day Three

MATCH OF THE DAY: I quite like Fujiryoga and have developed a soft spot for injury-riddled Asanoyama, but not enough that I dreaded this matchup. In fact, I was looking forward to it and was not disappointed; Asanoyama barreled into the younger man from Aichi Prefecture and nearly powered him out. However, a slip caused Asanoyama to crash down to the clay with Fujiryoga following a second later. Good, powerful sumo today.

KIMARITE OF THE DAY: There wasn’t a whole lot in the Kimarite department, so we’ll just give it to Atamifuji because I like Atamifuji. I always want Oho to do well, but he is not a sanyaku rikishi, and is enjoying an 0-3 at Komusubi this time around. Oho tried to be all fancy and got Atamifuji to the edge, but in the end Atamifuji’s superior size and skill was too much for Baby Taiho and Atamifuji won by uwatedashinage.

PINK MAWASHI DAY THREE: Damn it, Ura. I love Shodai dearly, but we can’t be losing to Shodai. Better luck tomorrow against Oshoma.

OVERALL SUMMARY: The fans were just as terrified as Onosato today in the IG Arena; I’ve never seen them so happy after a win that isn’t related to the yusho race. Ura is the People’s Yokozuna but Onosato is the Yokozuna that the people rooted for today; like them, I am… relieved to see Onosato win again. It’s been too long, Big Boy. Hosh lost, though, because they can’t both win, that would be ridiculous.

Now, Kirishima and the Sekiwake dominate the yusho race–is the new Big 3 Atamifuji, Kotoshoho, and Aonishiki? No, but they’re certainly making a good case for themselves. I was very glad to see Aonishiki powering out Hakunofuji, and significantly less glad to see Kotoshoho powering out my poor Yoshinofuji. Wakanosho and Shishi are the biggest threats from down the banzuke that I see, but Hoshoryu, Kazuma, and Takerufuji lead a pretty good (though very early) chase group.
