MATCH OF THE DAY: Ichiyamamoto and Midorifuji were both well out of their comfort zones, with Ichiyamamoto adjusting his tsuppari into a belt-forward approach that ended in what was almost a hatakikomi slap down. However, Ichi reached up and over and ended up tossing the smaller Midorifuji down by the belt. Well played, well played.
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: Takayasu wins this award with a relatively straightforward (but nothing was better) uwatenage against firecracker Hiradoumi. Hiradoumi is always one of the guys who just reliably gives it his all; today, however, it wasn’t enough against the older and bigger Takayasu.
PINK MAWASHI DAY TWO: Ura, unfortunately, faced on opponent well versed in his tricksy ways: Oshoma, who’s too average in size and style for Ura to try something crazy with, just kept up with the steady thrusts and Ura didn’t really have a response. He held up his hands in surrender and stepped out, so Oshoma got his tsukidashi. Jerk.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Takanosho had about one second of resistance against the senior Yokozuna today, and to complement Hoshoryu’s decisive victory, Onosato obliterated poor Hakuoho, though he did his best. Notably, Iron Man Tamawashi seemed to be having some difficulty kneeling, and both Yoshinofuji and Onokatsu looked a little dazed as well, though Onokatsu got his win. Hopefully they’re all well tomorrow. Baby Fujinokawa and Kise boy Churanoumi are on the road to their zensho yusho.
Today’s fun fact is that miracle student Ochirsaikhan, hailed as the next young star and early recruit of Isegahama-beya, was presented today and took on the shikona Asahifuji–the 63rd Yokozuna. Apparently, ex-Asahifuji asked for the name to be given to the young recruit rather than the other way around, so he must really be something. He’ll be having his first match tomorrow. All eyes are on him!
