Not too surprisingly, but sadly, Hakunofuji announced his kyujo today. He says it’s a big toe injury, though it sure looks like a knee problem… either way, good luck with your recovery, big boy. Onokatsu got the default win for the second day in a row. Smooth sailing!
MATCH OF THE DAY: Ryuden and Chiyoshoma shared a good match–two dislikeable rikishi, but I wish them the best. Chiyoshoma basically wore a bandage sock for his right foot today, which is an interesting look. Ryuden got the belt grip pretty quickly and started parading Chiyoshoma around and giving him a mega-wedgie. Ouch… in the end, Ryuden drove out Chiyoshoma by yorikiri.
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: I love when these happen (to rikishi I don’t like), but man, it’s kind of sad. Asakoryu and Oshoma took to the clay opposite each other, with Oshoma jumping a little to the left immediately, pulling Asakoryu forward. Then, unfortunately, Oshoma lost his balance and fell forward, touching his hands down on the clay. He loses by tsukite, or hand touch down. Ha.
PINK MAWASHI DAY THIRTEEN: Unnecessary cartwheels? Check. Kachi koshi? No.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Aonishiki is the sole leader, unsurprisingly. After Atamifuji’s weirdly decisive victory over Abi and Kirishima’s less decisive (but still strong) win over Shishi, they are the two chasers. What an… unusual group of rikishi. Mostly Atamifuji. But I’m so happy for all three of them… Kirishima yusho, anyone? I’m in. The official winner of the Makushita division is Nobehara, after a fantastic bout between him and popular Enho. Down in Juryo, Wakanosho beat his competitor, Fujiseuin, and is now in the lead of the yusho race by one win.
Aonishiki, as predicted, will take on Yokozuna Onosato, and Kirishima and Atamifuji will fight one another. Hoshoryu will fight Kotozakura, and Abi with fight Takayasu in the last three matches. Asanoyama fights Wakamotoharu, Ura fights Oho, and Shishi takes on Yoshinofuji. Both Yoshinofuji and Wakamotoharu are fighting against make-koshi. Now the talk will really start about possible Yokozuna #3.
