Haru 2026: Day Five

No kyujo announcements, finally, though Onokatsu made his anticlimactic return. Short one today, sorry.

MATCH OF THE DAY: I quite like Asahakuryu, and he had a great match against Tobizaru, popular but evidently not doing so hot. Tobizaru got a quick belt grip but Asahakuryu had other ideas. They actually both had other ideas and paraded each other around for a while before Asahakuryu rolled his eyes and shoved Tobizaru out. He moves to 4-1. Genki alert!

KIMARITE OF THE DAY: Gonoyama has looked great this time around, and today was no different. This is really the only good kimarite we’ve gotten so far, so thanks, Gonoyama, for the abisetaoshi. Gonoyama was on top from the beginning and Oshoumi put up a truly commendable fight, but ultimately lost out. Oshoumi has fought his little heart out and he looks like an early favorite for the Pink Star for Effort.

PINK MAWASHI DAY FIVE: Tamawashi absolutely annihilated Ura today. Ura is good, but sometimes he just has no response to tsuppari guys, and that’s probably a habit he should break. He moves to 3-2.

OVERALL SUMMARY: Today was pretty much textbook, with Wakatakakage’s defeat of Kotozakura (despite Kotozakura’s best attempts to get his mawashi off) being the highlight of today’s sumo. I’d like to applaud Churanoumi and Fujinokawa for their admirable, but not ultimately successful, bouts against Hoshoryu and Aonishiki, respectively. Takayasu, to my fury, beat Yoshinofuji, and Takanosho beat a very clearly injured Onokatsu. Kotoshoho forgot how to sumo against Daieisho, so Takas -yasu and -nosho are our only undefeated rikishi so far. The chase group includes fantastic rikishi such as Hoshoryu, Kirishima, and Asahakuryu, because there isn’t a clear third place. Maybe Shodai? Kotoshoho?

Well, anyway… good sumo, boys.
