Once more, trying out a different format… or adding to the old format? Or something? We’ll see!
MATCH OF THE DAY: No doubt: Atamifuji and Aonishiki. They had a brilliant match today, or rather two matches. The first was led largely by Aonishiki, who paraded Atamifuji around the ring before trying a throw, which was abruptly stopped by Atamifuji as they both fell. They hit the ground at the same time, resulting in a mono-ii that ended in a quicker win for Aonishiki. A very good showing by both men!
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: Oshoumi’s kotenage against Hitoshi as the first match of the day is the winner. Oshoumi may be a visitor from juryo, but his career is looking up and I’m happy to see him doing well, though Hitoshi is not exactly Makuuchi’s finest.
PINK MAWASHI DAY TWO: Ura and Midorifuji shared a bizarrely long bout with a lockup in the middle. The two technicians are good friends but the Pink Man was able to secure a win by good old frontal crush out, yoritaoshi. Ura fights Fujinokawa tomorrow.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Hoshoryu’s dohyo-iri with Meisei and Hiradoumi was definitely worth watching. Kusano, surprisingly, lost again while both the Waka brothers got their victories. Tomorrow, Onosato takes on Abi, Hoshoryu has Hakuoho, and Aonishiki fights Kotozakura. Wakatakakage is going to fight Tamawashi and Kirishima will fight Atamifuji. In other news, Asanoyama lost his second bout to Nishinoryu and nothing exciting happened in Makushita or the rest of Juryo in particular except for a decisive win for Mita.
Today’s post was shorter but I have yet to decide what format is best. We’ll have to see what happens tomorrow as well!
As a parting fun fact, fans of other sports, specifically basketball, might be interested in this video from the Kise-beya YouTube channel. Also, a guide to the ranking system of sumo has been posted on the website. The hyperlink is not working so hopefully this does.
So long and goodnight!
