MATCH OF THE DAY: I have to make an exception. If anyone is just getting into sumo now, look no further than Kirishima vs Takayasu. They tried everything; tsuppari, disconnected pushes, locking up, but neither came out on top. They both looked weary and each went for a throw, but Kirishima remembered his dreams of Ozeki and threw Takayasu down. He dragged Takayasu back to his feet and gave him a nod of respect before collecting his numerous kensho.
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: There were two kotenage today: the Onami brothers throwing and getting thrown, respectively. But I hate when Chu-Chu loses and I always like an AtamicFuji win, so let’s focus on that one. Atamifuji and Wakatakakge struggled, with Atami going for the taped elbow early on. Not kind, but necessary. He had a very clean throw, but Wakatakakage stayed down for a bit, clenching his teeth and clutching his elbow. That looks like it hurts.
PINK MAWASHI DAY EIGHT: This is what we call URA-ZUMO!! The Nakabi magic is in the air, and Ura was happy to be in his hometown on his favorite day of the basho. Roga, like all wrestlers in Osaka, felt a bit uncomfortable against the hometown hero. However, Roga went into it with a positive attitude and a lot of tsuppari. He forced a flailing Ura to the edge, and Ura locked eyes with the extremely cute toddler with an Ura towel, then with eager Ichiyamamoto. Actually, he didn’t, but he did throw Roga in a beautiful shitatenage. Ichi was thrilled, and Ura did a little fist pump as he jogged back to his place.
OVERALL SUMMARY: With both Ozeki and the Yokozuna losing today, the yusho race got a little messed up. Gonoyama’s back-to-back victories over Kise means that he’s now at 7-1, joined by Kotoshoho, Kirishima, and Takanosho. Hoshoryu will take on Takanosho tomorrow, while Kotoshoho will face Ura to excite the crowd. Gonoyama will take on 6-2 Kotoeiho, and Kirishima will fight Daieisho.
