I almost missed this in my rush to get my post done today, but ex-Makuuchi Daiamami has retired. Daiamami was very large, very sweet, and very babyish, so I was quite fond of him, but I must say, his career had been on a downward spiral for a little bit. I think it’s good for him to get out before losing those knees… and lose some weight. Love you very much, big guy; we’ll miss you in Juryo. Or Makushita. But we’ll miss you!
Short post today; busy with both my sorrow for Daiamami and my extracurriculars.
MATCH OF THE DAY: I adore Churanoumi, but even I didn’t expect him to be the one who finally took Oshoma down a peg. He did, however, after a back and forth tsuppari battle that ended up with Oshoma over the edge with a failed twist-down of Churanoumi. There was a mono-ii but it was confirmed that Churanoumi won. You go, Chu! So proud.
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: My initial reaction upon seeing this kimarite was “is that a typo of tsukidashi?‘ But nope! Tsuridashi is totally a thing. Today it was used by Kinbozan, who often appears on the wrong side of the announcement for Kimarite of the Day. He pulled a frontal lift out on an unsuspecting Tokihayate.
PINK MAWASHI DAY SIX: Yoshinofuji + Ura = very sad. Ura and Hatsuyama, my favorite rikishi and a member of both my fantasy teams, are both 0-6. I am… not happy. That is all.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Hoshoryu almost screwed up, but pulled off a win on poor, winless Takanosho. Wakatakakage, after two false starts, came close to beating Onosato, but the Yokozuna spun himself around and out of danger. Abi defeated Asakoryu, meaning he is the only rikishi at 6-0 (insane!) followed by the Yokozuna, Aonishiki, Kirishima, Fujinokawa, Oshoumi, and Oshoma, after his loss today. This is a fun group of rikishi.
Longer post tomorrow, I promise. Thank you so much for reading!
