MATCH OF THE DAY: I am not a Tobizaru fan, so I was a bit too happy to see Wakanosho almost fly out but then rally magnificently to take out the Flying Monkey, or his English name, Fly-Mon. However you want to brand him, Tobizaru is not, and never will be, one of my boys. But I like Wakanosho, and he and Shishi remain the best Maegashira contenders in what’s promising to be another interesting basho.
KIMARITE OF THE DAY: Henkas are bad. I stand by that, henkas are bad. But when you’re the size and age of Fujinokawa, it’s probably okay. And against Kotoshoho, I’m truly not all that peeved. I don’t actually hate Kotoshoho, but I do actually like Fujinokawa, but this was basically the ideal henka for me–taking one threat out of the yusho race for now and putting one of my personal favorite threats back in. Nice, clean, no sweat henka turned to tsukiotoshi from the Muscle Hamster.
PINK MAWASHI DAY FIVE: Not talking about this. I don’t hate Hakunofuji but boy do I hate seeing Ura lose. He almost tried something at the tawara but the magic just wasn’t there.
OVERALL SUMMARY: Well, this is an interesting situation. Hiradoumi got his first win to hand Kirishima his first loss. It also got the amazing line, “I’ve been attacking, but losing.” Hiradoumi knows the true trouble of being a sumo wrestler. He also stated that he wanted to charge hard at the tachiai, which was revolutionary for Hiradoumi fans everywhere. And I thought Shakespeare was dead!
THE YUSHO REPORT: Shishi and Wakanosho are the sole leaders of the tournament. This is not what I saw myself saying on Day Five, but I’m kind of here for it. I’m not big on Shishi and I’m fond of but not too fond of Wakanosho, so this is kind of interesting for me. We’ve got *takes deep breath* Takerufuji, Nishikifuji, Takayasu, Kotoeiho, Hakunofuji, Aonishiki, Kirishima, and Hoshoryu as a chase group. Hoshoryusho is still in the cards, and Kirishima and Aonishiki would be totally fine, too.
Down in Juryo, to my astonishment, rookie Arashifuji is a lot better than I was giving him credit for. He took down ex-Makuuchi Kagayaki and White Bear Shirokuma took down Nishinoryu to move to 5-0. Arashifuji was simply not on my radar but Shirokuma has been pretty good before; should be a good yusho race as they most into the rest of the basho.
