Great sumo today, but unfortunately, dear Wakanosho now exists in a place that can only be described as “concussed as hell”. Best of luck to him as he recovers… or retires… but he’ll probably be fine.

MATCH OF THE DAY: There are two great contenders for this: Asanoyama-Mitakeumi and Fujiryoga-Chiyoshoma. I don’t like Chiyoshoma so we’re gonna do the first one. Poor, dear Mitakeumi is 0-7, which is not something we like to see. I wonder if he just feels a bit tired now that Tamawashi isn’t here anymore. Mitakeumi really gave it his all today as the two rikishi fought to the edge, rallied, fought to the edge again, rallied, fought again, and then Asanoyama got Mitakeumi down with an uwatenage throw. Beautiful sumo; Mitakeumi is not doing as well as I’d like but he looked like an Ozeki today.

KIMARITE OF THE DAY: Takanosho is not my favorite rikishi, and Yoshinofuji, obviously, is my boy. Unfortunately, my boy was not locked in today–this is his sanyaku debut, and he apparently only beats people he statistically shouldn’t, so… I don’t know, it’s a choice. Full credit to Yoshinofuji for doing the splits as he went down–those guys are flexible–but he still went down to the abisetaoshi backward force down (?).

PINK MAWASHI DAY SEVEN: No.

OVERALL SUMMARY: Well, Nishikifuji took down Shishi, which I can’t say I’m all too bummed out about. So this brings us to the extremely fun situation of having a superfun seven rikishi lead group with an eight rikishi chase group: our leaders are (buckle up) 5 Maegashira, a semi-Ozeki, and a real Ozeki. They are Takerufuji, Nishikifuji, Shishi, Kotoeiho, Takayasu, Aonishiki, and Kirishima; Hoshoryu leads the chase group. This is a very interesting basho…
